New Guide… Search Engine Optimisation Tips for 2020 – Is SEO Dead or Can You Still Get All The Traffic You Need From The Search Engines?
We don’t do that much SEO for clients as we specialise in Conversion Optimisation although it’s in our DNA, I started playing with SEO in 2007 ish and started an agency in 2009 to offer this service.
Back then it was super easy to rank for really competitive keywords but the awareness wasn’t there for a lot of Businesses ( at least the ones I was talking to) and I struggled to sell it.
As time has gone on it’s popularity has grown and now it’s super crowded in the Search Engine Results Pages and because of this it’s a lot more difficult to get rankings and keep them.
But is “a lot more difficult” impossible?
Not at all, we’ve been getting consistent traffic for a couple of years on a site in a pretty competitive market Properties for Investors despite not going a lot of work to the SEO part of the website – we’ve just focussed on Fundamentals.
Another site which is a sister one to the one mentioned above is a lot newer and targeting a lot more competitive keywords, such as Fast Property Sales despite this we’ve started to see rankings appear in Google and that turning into traffic.
Focus on Fundamentals
It’s been my experience with nearly 20 years experience in trying to get traffic from Google and the other search engines that although a lot has changed, there’s still a lot that hasn’t changed.
Keywords, Content, Links area still fundamental to getting rankings. Sure the ranking algorithms are way more complicated but Google and the others are still looking for the best most relevant content to serve their customers (searchers) this hasn’t changed and won’t change going forward.
So don’t worry about how complicated most companies (with ulterior motives) want to make it seem the reality is for most people you can get results by focusing on the fundamentals.
My main theory for SEO for the last 10 years…
Pick a keyword or few.
Create content around those keywords.
Ensure Title’s, Meta description etc have keywords in – Yoast SEO for WordPress is great at helping you out here.
See what ranks, if you look in Googles Search Console you should start to see rankings appear over time.
Once you have rankings you can throw some more content at those ranking keywords, or create content attacking others you are ranking for.
Then you can consider other SEO factors such as more keywords etc etc.
I guess what I am trying to say is make sure you have the basics covered first before getting more technical, such as making sure you have Search Console set up for your website.
Or that you have Analytics set up.
Without these you have no idea how well you are doing or what to do next.
Another gimme tip is to make sure all of your content is indexed in Google, there are several ways to automate this such as adding your site map to search console.
Or making sure you have internal links etc etc but…
The Easiest Way To Get Indexed In Google
Is to actually tell google you have new content and request that they index your page!
As simple as it sounds this is a fundamental step in getting rankings, there are a lot of big sites that don’t have all of their pages indexed, they could solve this by requesting Google to index them.
To do this go to Google Search Console
In the bar at the top of the page you can see “Inspect any URL in …” your website should be in the “…” so just add the page you want to check into this bar and search to see if Google has already indexed it.
You can see from the search above that this page is already listed – I’ve just listed it which gave me the inspiration for this post, what I should of done was take screen shots before and after but hey ho.
If your page isn’t listed Google will tell you that it isn’t and you would then want to click the button on the bottom right that says “Request Indexing” it will take a few seconds to check the page can be indexed and then it will add it to the indexing list for the crawlers to check.
After it’s been indexed your page will appear in Google and should start to receive rankings depending on your keywords, competition etc etc.
As mentioned before this is a great first step in getting rankings and Search Engine Optimisation tips for 2020
